We spent our last night in Canada at Waterton National Park. It was sunny and cooooold.
The city had tons of bighorn sheep wandering around and licking the buildings (we tried but couldn't get a good picture of that):
While I thought the buildings looked good and sugary, Mom and Daddy wouldn't let me get a taste.
As I mentioned before, Waterton National Park is the Canadian half of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, and Waterton's upper lake straddles the border, so we got our first America-sighting in almost a week!
Looking South on Lake Waterton, towards the US:
After exploring and getting a hotel room, we headed to Red Rock Canyon, because it sounded cool. It was a long drive, in the dark, with rumors of wild animals, so we didn't stay long. Red Rock isn't very impressive or red in the pitch dark, and we didn't take the time to revisit it in the morning, so here's a picture of what we saw, and what Photoshop tells us we would have seen an hour earlier:
The next morning, we headed out of our hotel for our last chance to explore what Canada had to offer and return to the good ol' U. S. of A.
Daddy wanted to hike up to a viewpoint, but it was too far for me (and there were warning signs about cougars), so we sent him up (alone) to take pictures:
The Prince of Wales Hotel was due to open for the season later that day:
Something's familiar about this picture:
Here I am posing at the foot of the trail to prove that I bravely hiked through the cougar-infested Canadian forests:
On our way out of the park, we stopped for one last look back at Waterton and the Canadian Rockies:
And off we went to the border. Just before reaching the border we saw a cinnamon-colored black bear by the side of the road. This was the last large wildlife we saw on our trip, except for a herd of cows in Montana.
USA! USA! USA!
Ever since the trip, I've practiced my Canadian by talking about my favorite black and yellow insects by saying "eh, Bee" over and over again. [ed note: "A, B" may also be the first two letters of the alphabet, but Miles loves saying it.]
☺
P.S. We had a lot of great participation in my Animals of Canada Contest. It is time to reveal the final answers!
Clockwise from the upper left: bighorn lamb, cinnamon-colored black bear, bald eagles, bighorn sheep, buffalo, moose, deer, elk, magpie, black bear (center picture).
Congratulations to everyone who played. You all get hugs!
